MEDICINE AND SURGERY (PRE-CLINICAL)

1. PROGRAMME PHILOSOPHY

The education of health professionals must be attuned to the health needs of the society. Thus, the proposed FUTA MB.BS program is solidly and philosophically committed to a competency- and technology-driven patient care, and a community-oriented approach to training of physicians and allied professionals. We shall adhere to our philosophy and continually emphasize to our would-be trainees the necessity for social responsibility, responsiveness, and relevance, as well as require their commitment to life-long learning so as to always be at the frontier of excellence and innovations in the art and science of 21st century practice of medicine.

2. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The medical curriculum is designed for a SIX-year period with the following broad objectives:

  • To train medical personnel with sound knowledge of the structure, function, and chemistry of the human body processes and use such to identify deviations as occur during various diseases;
  • To train medical officers with in-depth knowledge of therapeutics with ability to determine drug actions in their patients;
  • To produce clinicians capable of understanding diseases and disease manifestations using laboratory and pathological skills and knowledge, including the determination of the effect of diseases on the lives of individuals;
  • To train medical officers with sound knowledge and understanding of causes of diseases and other public health challenges to provide solutions based on statistical data;
  • To produce medical officers with ethical principles of the medical profession in attending diverse ethical and multicultural setting of the Nigerian Nation and other cultures;
  • To inculcate into the medical officers team-building/working skills and officers that imbibe an inter-disciplinary, collaborative approach to medical practice; and
  • To produce medical officers with sound theoretical scientific knowledge, skills and reasoning to effectively participate in collaborative research in various fields of the medical discipline.
  • 3. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    • Candidates shall be admitted into MB.BS program through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) or direct entry (DE). Candidates seeking admission into the program shall possess a minimum of five credits in either WASCE or GCE O ’Level or NECO in English Language, Biology/Zoology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics at ONE sitting.

    The UTME candidate shall have a minimum total score of 200 in the UTME subjects to qualify for post- UTME screening exercise.

    The UTME Subjects are;

  • English Language,
  • Biology,
  • Chemistry, and
  • Physics
  • Candidates seeking Direct Entry admission shall either:

    1. Possess a minimum of Second Class Upper in relevant subject areas of Basic Medical or Biological Sciences in addition to the minimum of five credits in either WASCE or GCE O ’Level or NECO in English Language, Biology (or Zoology), Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics at ONE sitting.

    OR

    2. Pass GCE Advanced Level or Higher School Certificate or JUPEBand score not less than B grades in Biology (or Zoology), Chemistry, and Physics at ONE sitting in addition to the minimum of five credits in either WASCE or GCE O ’Level or NECO in English Language, Biology (or Zoology), Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics at ONE sitting.

    N.B. The institution (FUTA) may, as determined by the Senate, introduce additional selection criteria into the admission process. For example, UTME and Direct Entry candidates may be required to sit for a comprehensive screening test.
